ESD what is it? Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the release of static electricity. ESD is a sudden and momentary flow of electric current between two electrical short or dielectric breakdown. A buildup of static electricity can be caused by tribocharging or by electrostatic induction. Or when two electrically charged objects, such as the human body and atmospheric dust or an electronic device come into contact with each other, static electricity is discharged.
